Dash Cracks and airbags

I have a '97 SETC, and there is a small crack in the dash running halfway around the area where the airbag is in the dash. Its just in the little groove so it dosnt really bother me, but my question is: if you get into an accident and the airbag goes off, do they replace the dash? It seems the airbag is designed to come right out of the dash, which would leave a huge square of damaged material. Anyone know?
