With an engine load, you could probably get severe knocking and wreck things.

But at idle it might not be descructive. I always wanted to try this, on a vehilce that was going for scrap, so see what would happen. I have thought that with the engine and cat hot, that O2 might decarb the things and clean the plugs, 02 sensor and cat etc. The ECU might freak out. It would see the signal from the O2 sensor, then assume that things were too lean, so it would want to add more fuel, and then would have to reduce the idle air flow to keep the RPM's on target. There could easily be an adaption fault. I would expect that idle RPMs could become uncontrollable and unstable. The ECU's enrichment attempts might also create a fueling condition which could lead to damaging knocking even at idle. So it would be hard to know what exactly would happen. Perhaps when Ander's writes off another engine with jelled lube oil, he can get out the torch and give it a shot with the cutting tip with O2 only. One would have to start with small flows of O2 and cautiously increase flow at idle. It would be interesting, but should only be attempted on an engine in a vehicle being scrapped. Perhaps not on a Saab the first go around. If it did not blow up, I would expect to see some signs of 'ash' in the exhaust. And afterwards the plugs or head should be out to have a look. Look at the 02 sensors as well. Hard to look at the cat, but perhaps it would burn clean somehow. A nice thought experiment in anycase. Never did a web search, maybe its been done before.
