Misfire/bad Trionic?

For the second time in a month the CEL has come on. The first time, I sent it over to the dealer, who couldn't get a code to come up. They said they called Georgia and were told if the CEL came on with no code, the Trionic unit was bad and needed to be replaced. They ended up pulling the main fuses to reset, and the light went out. It happened once more, and I pulled the fuses this time, and the light went out.
Today, the engine was missing and of course the light came on again. The dealer was talking $800 for the Trionic unit (47 80 284) but I'd like some advice before taking this route.
Thanks, Dennis
