The ends need to be kept very clean, but they have caps in them I assume. You can save some labor but you still have to have the system pumped down. The longer you take the more the system gets exposed to air and moisture. The AC shop will raise a concern about the reciever dryer.
I assume that the system is now fully discharged. Or did you detect a leak in an AC hose and there is still pressure in it that keeps air out. You don't want to take forever doing the pipes as far as air/moisture contamination goes, if the system is not now contaminated.
Some have done what you propose themselves, as well as the expansion valve. Not many, but the work was reported as a success.
