My father and I tackled this job on my 1994 900 SE V6. It's a big job, took 2 whole weekends (about 20-25 hours labor for us), and we spent a lot of money on parts and tools (~$1000). But we also saved big over the dealer and met with success. You need to be really well-prepared for this, though. I can give more advice & info on the board or off-list if you get serious about the job. I have medium DIY experience but would have been overwhelmed without my dad. He's got years of experience and used to do this kinda thing all the time back in the 50s and 60s.

As Anders notes, it seems strange to blame the head gasket for "running rough." I would work on other things first.

Anders -- we didn't reseal the engine oil cooler. Hope this isn't going to be a problem? I guess I can get at it w/o removing the heads, though.
