how is your clutch cable doing? are you having trouble with any other gears? i think david has a point with the synchros, but there seems to be a bunch of stuff that can go wrong ...
i usually throw it up in first then go quickly back to reverse, when i am going to backup...it seems to go in smoother when shifting to first 'first'....i used to have the same issue with reverse, but after my clutch was replaced, my linkage updated, and the switch to synthetic mtf0063 fluid, i couldn't be happier (well, as happy as i think i am going to get with the saab gears).....
just a couple of thoughts, maybe give your cable a tug under the hood, lift out the fusebox, pull the spring out a bit to adjust, or see if you can't engage that mechanism for adjusting by sticking your foot under the pedal and pulling up on it...
i also think that switching to synthetic gear fluid is a cheap, effective way to avoid (or at least prolong disaster) nasty issues with the transmission...
