Hey,
I'm not from the 60's generation, but I think the "Free-Wheeling" Saabs of yore had 2 cycle engines. 2-cycle engines have the lubricant (oil) mixed in with the gasoline, not separated as in our 4 cycle engines. For reasons that are slightly unclear to me, 2 cycle engines are not good at "engine braking", or using engine friction to slow down on a downshift, as 4 cycle engines are. I was told they lose lubrication when they do this.
Saab probably installed some sort of clutch to allow the car to "free-wheel" down a hill, instead of allowing it to try to engine brake and potentially damage itself. This is all just my speculation. As for the coasting, I do that all the time when I have the misfortune of being stuck in an automatic. It doesn't seem to harm anything, as long as it doesn't make you ride the brakes or speed excessively. Just don't put it in park or anything...
Best,
Lutfisk
