See the link. This is for a 1996 900S NA engine. He found a resistance problem, fixed that and that fixed things. Search his other posts to see what the model is.
Does the above have any merit?
One sensor could have a bad connection at its base. A resistance at the manifold could affect both sensors.
The first O2 sensors had one wire, yes a stupid ground through the exhaust. So live with that, its not my fault. Then they added a heater with its own input and ground wires. They did not run the heater current to ground through the exhaust as that current across any resistance would create a voltage offset for the sensor. The the four wire units came along with a dual sensor element for reasons that I don't understand, and these use the exhaust for gounds in many cases.
If you disconnect a sensor on heated up engine and measure the voltages on the two non heater wires, if you get a voltage from these with the ohm meter's other lead connected to ground, then the sensor voltage is relative to ground that that settles the issue completely as the only part of the sensor connected to anything other than your meter is the sensor base at the exhaust system.
The ground resistance has to be significant compared to the sensor's impedance to create a fault. How much resistance, I don't know. But a good connection is good enough. A resistance that is high enough will thow a CEL on a sensor. Nothing in that is conflicting.
Learn and go on. Let me know if you have find anything different when you check the open circuit voltages on a hot system.
