It's normally the compressor that goes. If that dye is still in the system try looking around the compressor housing for leaks.
It's a fairly difficult job to get to the evaporator on most cars.
I did have an evaporator on the old car diagnosed as faulty, so the dealer changed it out. I kept the old one as I was sceptical. Since there was a small machine shop at work, I fabricated a fitting where I could seal the evaporator and applied 50 psi of compressed air to check for leaks with the evaporator submerged in a tank. I didn't see any leaks.
A week later when the AC didn't work again, they said the compressor died. So I got them to change the compressor AND put the old evaporator back. They eventaully agreed to do it and I got the money back on the limited warranty. That was more than three years ago; my wife's sister now has that car on the same evaporator...
