Tire observation...

I just had some (slightly) used tires mounted on my 16" Viking rims. For the first couple of days they both lost lots of pressure. Then things seems to have settled in and now they hold pressure just fine.
(1) This is the second time I've noticed this happening...is it normal, or unusual?
(2) If normal, why in the world don't tire shops tell you about this on the way out the door? If I weren't so anal about my tire pressure, I could have really bent up my rims.
