Are you sure you are not a mechanic? The engine will usually try to start when the pump have failed because of the residual pressure.
Try to have a friend as a helper cranking the car over while you get under the car and bang on the gas tank with your fist or a rubber mallet (no hard or pointy hammers).
The shock waves through the tank almost always jump start a bad pump and the car usually runs until the engine is shut off again.
You see, the fuel pump commutator is built up of several plates (about 10 or 12) that the brushes rubs against.
It's usually only two or three of the plates that gets so bad that when the fuel pump (and brushes) stops over one of those plates, it wont start again.
With a labscope and a high sensitive Amp clamp hooked to the power feed, I can see the burned spots on the pump while it is running.
