I remember the same thing on my NG -- but not lately. The only major difference seems to be that I have an MBC. Perhaps it's something T-5 is doing? The ECU is aware of WOT vs. 7/8, and it does run things a little different at WOT, but nothing that seems to hurt power.
Lemme see if I can find out what the ECU manages differently...if that is indeed the difference...
