If the hanger for the cat converter, at the back, is the original design, it is probably cracked and that would cause problems that you describe. It was a hard mount and the expansion of the downpipe stresses it and cause it to break. There is a new design, from 1997 I think, that bolts in and uses, big surprise, a rubber hanger!
These will all fail and most haave failed by now and been replaced.
So check that out.
Otherwise check for other exhaust or shield issues.
