Yo Bart! Whoa, man, you've got to town already on your AC system!
Yes, the culprit was the fan speed control unit. It was a simple case of swapping it out.
My VIN is . . .T2014755 on a 1996 900SE V6 . . . I'm not sure if I had the earlier or later series. However, I also had my evaporator core replaced last month. I put in a used one from a 1997 V6, so I'm sure it was the later "Showa" version. The corresponding later model fan speed control module (with the separate screw-on plate) was installed.
I would swap out the fan speed control module, if your fan is completely non-responsive, as mine was.
My ACC was stuck on high speed and would not adjust. It also started blowing warm air also. My freon had leaked out somewhere, so it was recharged. My mechanic for the life of him could not find the leak. He felt certain, however, that it was not the evaporator core.
If you feel confident enough to swap out your fan speed control module on your own, go for it. That seems to be the main culprit most of the time.
This was the second failure on the fan speed control module on my car. The first one failed around 30,000 mi or so. NG Saabs are notorious for their fan speed modules failing. I swear, some undergrad summer intern at GM must have designed this AC system overnight high on caffine and sugar.
Good luck, bro.
