Removal of Antenna Mast - Alternative

After wrestling unsuccesfully to pull out the antenna mast, I tried the suggested alternative of pulling it out from the bottom. This required removal of the antenna motor housing and the antenna tube from the trunk. But that's not too difficult. The main problem was that the thin metal sleeve that goes over the antenna was just about fused to the inside of the antenna tube. I had to use pliers, thin screwdrivers and ultimately a drill to get the sleeve out - what a pain.
Turns out I had to remove the motor and open it up anyway as the plastic toothed belt had broken off inside and had to be removed. After putting everything back together, I fed in the toothed belt and the new antenna mast and it is now working perfectly - for now at least. I don't know whether I would ever bother to do this again though. A fixed flexible steel antenna would be fine.
