aftermath of a fuel pump change....(a bit long)

Hi all,
My fuel pump finally quit after 180+K km...no warning, no unusual behavior, nothing.
Anyhow, the pump was replaced by my mechanic but now there are two problems which I've tried to have remedied by him without success:
1. There is a humming coming from the fuel pump which resonates throughout the back of the car...very annoying at idle, but not noticeable at highway speeds. I took the car back to the mechanic, and after removing the fuel tank and inspecting the pump, he found nothing wrong. Instead he placed some foam between the tank and the body to help reduce the humming noise. Kind of works, but certainly not the fix I was looking for.
2. The car is difficult to start. Regardless of whether its been sitting warm or cold, sometimes it will start up as usual. Other times, I'll have to let it crank several times before firing up. Mostly, however, is it will start, then sputter, then either die or begin revving sporatically until idle is steady. Once started however, it drives normally. (except at full throttle and boost, the engine tends to hesitate and cutout, I'm not sure if this is related though)
I've read previous posts and can't find anything related to item #1. However, it seems my starting problems are related to either the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, or even the fuel line.
I don't want to go back to my mechanic anymore - he's becoming more of a nuisance and I'm even at the point where I'd take it to the dealer for inspection.
Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction.
Thx.
