Manual Trans Difficult Shifting

Am having problems with difficult shifting. The trans is very difficult to get into gear when warm. Checked the gear oil - ended up adding about .5 quart.
Problem persists. Contacted a mechanic that had my tranny rebuilt about 20K miles ago. He believes it to be a clutch problem - possibly a broken spring. Doesn't sound right to me, but Is this possible?
The shop is about an hours drive from home in Pittsburgh, PA - a very long way with an ailing car.
Welcome any suggestions.
