Chances are you won't see any snow but if you do, here is my list:
- windshield wiper fluid; fill it up and keep extra in the car, salt/sand is horrible and road spray builds up quickly
- blanket/winter coat
- ice scraper
- extra water to drink & snacks (granola bars)
- toolkit
- jumper cables
- cell phone/charger
- flashlight
As for driving, drive slowly and smoothly. Sudden movements on a slick road can cause your car to spin. Also, be careful if there is snow/slush on the road as you drive. Chances are there will be ruts (like horse-carriage wheels) - when you drive over these your call will pull strongly in the rut.
Lastly, ABS is great but it GREATLY increases your stopping distance. For this reason do not follow closely or what until the last minute to stop. I have found myself in the middle of an intersection on occassion because of this.
The net-net is this: snow driving is a blast if you are cautious and take it easy. Be prepared and have fun. Oh, and I would get a tune-up before the trip (or at least confirm all is OK).
