From what I understand, 60K service is just the usual oil change. It's the 65K service that's the biggie. If it would have held out for 5K it probably would have been caught. Also, not really anything to be upset about. This happens all the time. Probably not a Saab owner out there that hasn't had a pulley go on them.
Advantages of doing short belt, you bypass that blasted lower idler pulley, which is more expensive to replace and useless in my opinion. The newer 9-3 models come stock with the short belt and no lower idler so I can't imagine there would be any disadvantage, other than your car being modified. Some people are obsessive about that. Hope this helps.
