Extending the life of the Fuel Pump

After reading a few recent posts about fuel pump failures and how expensive they are, I of course began to wonder what I can do to prolong the life of my 97 900SET's fuel pump.
Is there any truth to the thoery that you should try to keep the tank at least half full so that the fuel pump doesn't have to work as hard?
Any other tips for prolonging fuel pump life?
...and how long do the fuel pumps "typically" last?
97 900SET 5d, auto, 62K miles.
