I highly recommend the covers. I went without using mine for a while since I only have the top down for a short while but they do protect as well as look really good on the car. The back panel below the window has accelerated wear from not using it. The rest of my top looks fine but that back panel which get the full ram effect when down, is getting ragged being exposed. Also, at the very least, tuck in your headliner material even if you don't get the covers on because they'll rub on the back of your headrests and get them dingy.
A cheaper alternative to the great looking plastic boot covers is the vinyl - leather like covers for about 1/3 the price (about $120). There are some slight modifications you might have to do since this is purely aftermarket and not something SAAB ever offered but it looks almost as good (i m h o) . The mods are minor, just attaching velcro I think and they'll be out of sight with the cover on but you'll probably see them all the times you don't use the cover and depending on your interior color, may not be asthetically pleasing.
Hope this helps.
