repeated polishing and waxing

OK, so I've washed my car, cleaned the paint, polished it and waxed it. Presumably I should now just wash the car for the next 6 months or whatever...
My question has to do with the next polish. Presumably there is no point in polishing over a good coat of wax, so presumably I have to let the wax wear off, or take the wax off with a cleaner, before polishing it again. Does that sound right? There is no point in repeated polishing unless the wax is removed?
Sorry to ask such a silly question... :-)
TIA
