Hie thee to the following site and drink as much from the knowledge basin as you can...http://forums.roadfly.org/forums/detailing/

Then, get over to PepBoys/Autozone/Kragans and get a claying set (Kragan's had one I bought a month ago for $17, and it was great on my three cars), follow the directions, and see if that removes the swirls. If not (but you WILL be impressed with what it actually does to the surface), read up on the various types of approaches to removing scratches and swirls on Roadfly.

Once you get to the level of selecting a protectant (I used to think of this as a "wax", but these Roadflies have a whole 'nuther patois for these products), I would encourage you to look at one of the synthetics that are much longer lasting than carnauba-based products. After a decent amount of assessment, I opted for the two-step Klasse approach, a German line that I suspect is only available via on-line merchants (linked to on the Roadfly site). It required a polish/protectant (known as All-in-One) and a Glaze that goes on after the polish/protectant is buffed off. Pretty easy, requiring no more skills than when I would apply Turtle Wax. That's it!

There is another multi-step approach involving Zaino products that is quite the rage at the Roadfly site, but it seemed to require way too much work for me.

Well, in re-reading this, I may actualy have glossed over (pun intended) the issue of ridding the finish of swirls. But I found this process of prepping and polishing my new 9-5, 7 year-old Volvo and 6 year-old Maxima to be a true rejuvenating process. The claying was a real eye-opener, since I had ony waxed the Volvo a month earlier...the difference that claying made was truely mind-boggling on the older finishes. (I did not clay the new Saab, as it would not have benefitted).

Hope you enjoy it as well.
