Argh! Scraped the rear bumper! Need help...

I wasn't paying attention backing into a spot in the garage at work and as I like to park as close as possible to one of the concrete posts (so as to avoid dings on at least one side of the car), I smacked the rear bumper. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
That being said, I have a number of scrapes/scratches on the plastic/rubber strip that goes around the bumper of my 9-3SE and want to try and clean it up. I was thinking of lightly sanding it down with a Unigrit block and then finishing it with some GR-40 and a coat of black Trim Color Shield. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
D-Man
