Is it a random orbital polisher or a rotary polisher? A rotary can cause all sorts of damage if you're not careful, but as Richard Griot is always so fond of showing in his catalogs, it's very hard to do any damage with a random orbital polisher. If that's what you have, then get yourself a couple of polishing pads and some machine polish from places like Griot's Garage or Classic Motoring Accessories (my personal favorite), and go to town! The only real tips I can think of are don't use too much polish, start and stop the polisher while the pad is on the car, and don't drag the cord over the paint.
