The PC orbital is an excellant tool, and will provide you many years of use. I don't know about the one from Griot's garage.
If you look around the web at sies like autogeek or topoftheline, you'll likely find a special package price which will include backing plates and various pads to get you started.
It will speed up your process, and can be a handy tool for other uses around the house. With various pads and polishes, you'll get amazing results on your car; but I've known folks to use stuff around the house on appliances, floors, bathroom surfaces...you get the idea.
