How do you keep wax off rubber/plastic trim?

One excuse I've found not to wax my cars much is that the wax gets on the rubber or plastic parts and discolors them. Without just being incredibly careful, is there a trick to preventing this (like maybe treating the trim with armorall or something first?) I'd like to make use of my buffer for waxing, but that will be impossible to keep that from touching the trim. Thanks in advance. -Jim '99 9-5 wagon 3.0
