(1) Wash thoroughly with a household detergent to remove oil, grease, road grime, old wax, etc.
(2) Use paint detailing clay to remove surface contaminents. Mothers and Clay Magic offer excellent clays available nationwide. This step really makes a diff and is super easy to do.
(3) Clean paint to remove oxidation, swirls, light scratches, etc. There are lots of paint cleaners on the market and no one cleaner can do it all. But if I had to pick one I choose Meguiar's #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish. Not easy to find in stores as its a product sold mainly to body shops but it can be found at auto paint supply stores and, of course, online. Polishing by hand requires a more aggressive product than polishing by machine. The beauty of DACP is that it starts aggressive but buffers to a fine polish. It may be the only paint cleaner you need.
(4) Polish paint with a swirl mark remover. If you want even more gloss than what the step above provides, a swirl mark remover is a mild polish that will leave the paint in terrific shape. 3M and Meguiar's make excellent SMR's. If you want a finer polish, check out P21S Gloss Enhancing Paint Cleaner or Pinnacle's Paint Cleaner Lotion. Both of these are very mild polishes which prep the car for waxing.
(5) Wax or Sealant - which way do you want to go? Both represent opposite ends of the detailing spectrum. Fact is that the industry is moving away from carnauba waxes and headed towards sealants and synthetic waxes. Companies like Meguiars, Mothers, Eagle One, 3M and many others offer both types and are blending technologies to give the best of both worlds. If you only polish and wax your car once or twice a year a sealant is the better choice due to its superior durability. Carnauba waxes are fine but realize they won't last too long - 90 days max with 6-10 weeks being average.
Hope all this helps.
