Don't get the slip-over bonnets unless you're buffing out polish or wax that you've already applied. The pads you want are the foam pads that places like Classic Motoring Accessories (one of my favorite places) sells. You put the compound/polish/wax/etc. on the pad, then put the pad on the car, and then start the machine. It doesn't matter if the entire pad isn't on the car. Some of it can be up in the air if you're polishing a small area like your mirror housing. Since your paint's not in great condition, you'll probably need a clay bar, a light rubbing compound like 3M Perfect-It rubbing compound, a polish, and a wax. Getting three pads so you'll have one for the rubbing compound, one for the polish, and one for the wax is also a good idea, but some of us still put wax on by hand. There are different grades of foam for different uses, but for me, anyway, a standard polishing pad works fine for the rubbing compound and polish, and a softer one is good for waxes.
