It all depends on the detailer and the "amateur". I know many enthusiasts whose detailing skills are much better than many pro's.
Experience and expertise are the deciding factors, much more than products or tools. Its the amateur who thinks they can go out and buy all the killer toys and consider themselves on a level with an experienced detailer.
What a talented detailer brings to the table is an intimate knowledge of problem solving. That detailer will see (and be paid to correct) more problems in a week's time than most enthusiasts will see in a lifetime. A detailer is expected to do things that an owner would likely never experience - cleaning up vomit, blood, pet "residue", things like that. And the detailer is expected to do all this in a few hours time. No goofing off, tinkering with the car, taking breaks, chatting up the neighbor, yappin on the phone, yadayadayada.........
Can an enthusiast get the same results, even better results, as a pro detailer? Absolutely.
If there is a mystery behind pro detailing its the successful intergration of top quality results and good business sense. Most detailers I've met were great with the buffer and terrible with the money. The one's that can handle both with success are the one's to look for.
