Why Saab needs an SUV

Here are some April sales stats for Volvo, taken from a press release at http://www.blueovalnews.com to illustrate why, in my opinion, Saab needs an SUV to survive in today's market.
Model, April 2003 sales, April 2002 sales, % change
S40, 1030, 1300, -25.8%
V40, 288, 288, 0.0%
S60, 3096, 3427, -9.7%
V70, 1073, 857, +25.2%
V70XC, 1781, 1463, +21.7%
C70, 337, 391, -15.8%
XC90, 2263, n/a
S80, 1027, 1225, -16.2%
Total 10895, 9039, +20.5%
Nearly 40% of total Volvo sales in April were the all wheel drive V70XC and XC90. Year to date figures were similar, with the all wheel drive model sales up significantly, while sedan sales sales were down. Saab's 4.967 total April sales record would look even better with 3,000 additional SUV or awd wagon sales each month.
Based on the reviews I've read, Volvo did it right with the XC90. It's roomy, powerful, and relatively economical for a vehicle of its size and type. Pretty nice looking, too. Let's hope that Saab can come up with something at least as good, if not better. Not, mind you, a rebadged GMC Envoy.
