In most cases. The only exceptions I've seen is when special programs designed to make a leased car massively affordable are not matched by similar purchase incentives. When NINES purchsed the Aero Wagon, there was a small but significant advantage to purchase versus lease at the end of a two or three year lease. And our insurance co. includes full replacement coverage for a new car during the first year of ownership, removing that bit of potential risk. But the difference ***is*** small.
As for people getting screwed in a lease deal, that is legend. I've sat and negotiated (or purchased from the "loss leader" newspaper ad) price down to the nubs, and then when I enquired about leasing, the resulting offer went right back to list price!!! And every consumer leasing information source I've seen has at least mentioned, if not highlighted, the need for "gap coverage" on a lease. Not that the financial hit isn't just as bad when an owned year-old vehicle is totalled, ... it's just that with a lease, it feels worse.
