You can get "drop in replacement" H4 headlights for $80-100 for the pair. The light output and beam spread are virtually identical to what you get with the very expensive European Saab headlight assemblies.
European lights have a completely different beam spread, being uniformly spread and with a sharp cutoff rising from left to right (Except where they drive on the left side of the road...). Traditional USA headlights have a "hot spot" projected out about 100 ft. and slightly to the right. Since the total light output is pretty similar between traditional USA halogen sealed beams and the standard 55 watt H4s, the USA lights may seem brighter. The European beam pattern, with its sharp cut-off, is more effective in fog or snow, and is friendlier to oncoming traffic.
