if you talk your parents into or out of a car and things don't work exactly right 100% of the time, you'll never hear the end of it. That's a guaranteed part of family life.

General rule of thumb is to give a car a year to settle down and let others do most of the debugging. However, if they really want a Merc, let them. It's a fine car, just like a Saab. And yes, Merc's reputation does seem to be slipping these days, they're trying to compete with the Japanese premium brands and not price themselves into the stratosphere.
