simple brake pad question

On the back of most modern pads sold are some metal clips. These clips seem to be designed to fit inside of the brake caliper cylinders and hold them securely as springs pushing outward.
In my experience these springs are very difficult to compress to get into the brake caliper and often I squeeze them a little with a pair of pliers to make them fit a little easier.
Is this a bad habit?
