I would like to see some discussion of this issue. On the 9-5 board, I mentioned that the shift paddles on my new Arc are too low to reach from the 10 and 2 oclock hand positions. Mike Lynch replied that the 8 and 4 positions are recommended now, to avoid airbag deployment.
This reasoning seems wrong. With hands in the 8 and 4 positions, you have little wheel movement before an elbow hits the ribcage. To turn more sharply you have to remove a hand from the wheel, which is difficult in a tense emergency situation. I grant you that 8 and 4 may be safer IF the airbag deploys, but what is the probability of that happening? Once in a half million miles? Everyday safety should not be sacrificed based on such a low probability.
