GM influence cuts both ways.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Sat, 14 Jun 2003 13:31:45 In Reply to: Re: what does 'NG' mean ?, james, Sat, 14 Jun 2003 13:15:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The NG900 was the first Saab that used a GM platform and a GM engine, the 2.5 liter 24 valve V6. The first V6's in the 900's and 9000's had issues and Saab folks weren't used to changing cam belts. Many folks find satisfaction in lampooning GM's influence on Saab. The other side of that pancake is that GM money and influence has helped Saab prosper especially as regards to the Saab plant in Trollhattan which arguably produces that highest quality European cars from any manufacturer.
My 96 900SE has been absolutely perfect and retains a healthy Saab consistency of design and execution. The 99-2002 9-3's are only slightly modified NG900's, subtley different lower valances (same exact sheetmetal), side airbags in the seats, and steering wheel mounted radio controls, mildly improved horsepower and the introduction of the Viggen, the ultimate Saab performance car some say.
The entirely new 9-3 SportsSedan or 9-3SS is more GM still and more mainstream abondoning the hatchback like the 9-5 did in 1999, which ain't necessarily such a bad thing from my point of view. The 9-3SS still has a healthy dose of Saab influence, aircraft style interior and key on the floor to name a few, still very much a Saab through and through.
