These cars are immensely strong. Ever since they started racing Legacys in WRC in late 80s, they began to make very swift progress in passive safety. The Impreza platform is now strong as a rock, much stronger than anything else you can buy in its class. Stronger than many much more expensive cars. The Legacy was criticized a lot for being way too heavy in it's current generation. The A-pillars, for example, are made of high-strength steel that is 2.5mm in thickness, compared to 0.2mm thick in previous generation! The weight of the current generation of Legacy is 500lbs more that the previous generation, despite having pretty much same chassis and drivetrain and being of almost the same size. It has consistently taken top honors at all crash tests. The new generation is more of the same buy much lighter. The weight savings are through the use of lighter metals. Most of the suspension, for example, is forged Aluminum alloy, which is both much lighter AND stronger than previously used stamped steel. Body strength is up considerably. The platform has been completely reworked and very few parts have been reused. There will be new generation of engines, except for the H-6, which is already pretty new. The new EZ engine family is quite different from the venerable EJ, with different cylinder spacing and everything. Reportedly, they will finally start using a version of VTEC/VANOS that will make for considerably higher output and much better fuel economy. And, of course, there will be a new turbocharged 2.5l H-4, probably making around 250-280 hp. It will probably be pretty expensive.
My wife has already seen the new Legacy and she likes it much better than the current one.
