Some CA residents can tip you on what to do/see. As for getting there:
Check out Southwest Airlines for fares. You need to fly out of Providence or Manchester. If you are buying in advance you should be able to get swome cheap fares, but they have sales all the time. Get on their email list and you'll find some good prices. The flights all have a stop along the way, but it's usually cheaper than the Big 6 airlines, and they are on time.
You should be able to get a fly/drive deal with one of their rental car partners (probaly Hertz).
And be sure to get a U-Wreck-Em that's fun to drive because you'll want to drive up Highway 1 to get to SF. One of the most beautiful drives in the world.
SF can be expensive (but worth it) and you'll probably need a hotel.
Try the Hotel David, Hotel Bijou or one of several Irish-run hotels. You can find them on the web.
In SF, be sure to get a seafood fix at Pompei's Grotto. It's down in the Fisherman's Wharf area and looks like it could be a dive, but it has some of the best seafood in town at very un-SF prices. I go there every time I'm in SF. Play tourist: Go to Alcatraz, take a ferry ride in the harbor, drive down Lombard Street, ride the cable cars, go up Coit Tower. Go to the beaches south of the entrance to SF Bay. Forget the name(s) but they are gorgeous.
Hope this helps! Have a great trip.
