All these analogies are cute, but none are very accurate. Does the restaurant charge you by the hour for preparing your meal? No. A mechanic has an hourly rate for labour, which is separate from selling you the parts. The mark-up on parts a mechanic charges is or should be for the time it takes to order the parts, and for the troubles associated with keeping parts in inventory.
