I was in Beijing on business about 20 years ago and staying at the Beijing Hotel. The same week, a new hotel out in the suburbs (Fragrant Hills) was opening, designed by the Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. Lots of celebrities had been invited to the grand opening, but the new hotel wasn't ready for guests yet, so they all stayed at the Beijing Hotel. Anyway, I had a cold and went to the little drugstore counter in the Beijing Hotel lobby to get some aspirin. After I paid for the pills, I turned around to walk away and ran right into Jackie O, face to face, boom. (She was very thin and almost weightless). I apologized, she said "Don't worry about it," and that was that. When I checked in for the flight home to Hong Kong a few days later, I was assigned a middle seat, so I asked my host from the Ministry of Finance to see if he could get me a window. A few minutes later he brought me a new boarding pass. I got on the plane and took my window seat. I.M Pei came down the aisle (I had met him once in grad school some years before, so I recognized him but of course he didn't remember me). His wife and teen-aged son were with him. They all stopped opposite me, looked at their boarding passes, and his wife took the aisle seat, Pei sat in the middle seat next to me, and their son frowned at me and headed for the back of the plane. It was a very frosty flight home.
