I agree about rollovers & that stuff, and I wanted to say that for many people the 'illusion of safety' is what they're after. Another important thing is the handling - the ability to avoid the collision in the first place.
But crash tests are done against a fixed barrier. So that's like a head-on with the same-size/weight car where both are traveling at that speed. Momentum transfer is about equal, deformation is about equal, and the resulting combined mess ends up stationary. This also assumes that the crash deformation is about equal.
A head-on with unequal-weight vehicles transfers momentum unequally. Look at it this way...
Saab 40mph against Saab 40mph head-on is just like Saab 40mph vs. a fixed barrier. But a Saab 40mph vs. a railroad locomotive 40mph is like a Saab doing 80mph against a fixed barrier. What I DON'T know is whether the crash-test results are corrected for this effect.
