Route: Long Island to Albany and back.
Summary: Trip up was Hell, trip back was a breeze (once we found the secret passage). New Salem Garage retains their five star rating for service (in my book).
Took the '02 Aero up, gawd, what a car! Usually we take the wife's '01 9-3SE due to it being owned vs. mine being leased. But the Aero needed a 20K checkup and no one does it better than New Salem Saab. Kudos to mechanics Peter and Craig. These guys rock! And a big poop for their boss for making them work the day after the 4th. But it worked out for me. They managed to figure out how to get my foglights to work without the Xenon's on. Fogs are kinda pointless otherwise. They also shut off the consarned seatbelt warning bong thus dramatically improving my quality of life. Final word on the checkup, nothing wrong with the car. The only flaw I've found in the year I've driven this is the bolt securing the door retaining strap (keeps the door from opening too far) came loose. What a car (did I mention that?)!
The trip up we were warned via the radio that I-95 was down to one lane due to construction (on a holiday weekend! Brilliant!). We opted for an alternative route I used to take that put us on the Thruway at exit 13. That was a gross miscalculation. Suffice to say, I guess everyone else had the same idea.
While upsate we ventured up to the Adirondacks to see some relatives, take in the sights. Routes 30 and 30a were no doubt built for the benefit of Saab drivers.
Trip back started at Exit 24 on the Thruway but we immediately hit the 40 mph caravan of SUV's, minivans and pickup trucks. Talk about a brigade mentality. Everyone lines up in the left lane and there they park. I swear someone's told these people they must drive their P'sOS in the left lane only. A couple times I'd approach one from the rear and they'd courteously move over...and then pop right back in the left lane. No one to pass, just seems like they unconsciously gravitate there.
The left lane is for passing!!!! <sheesh>
Anyway we quickly exited at 23 and made our way over to the Taconic where at times we were the only car in sight. NYS troopers were out in force soliciting 'donations' but they left us alone. Hope everyone else had a great holiday!
