The scenery, if not too foggy, is breathtaking. In addition there are ample parks along the way for short day hikes, camping, etc.
I snowboard and Whistler is definitely on my list of places to board in the future. The only time I've been there was after a friend's October wedding on Salt Spring Island so there was no snow. Vancouver as a city and BC in general are some of the most scenic places I've been, probably topping Hawaii and San Francisco because of the variety of sights and activities they offer.
In addition, on Vancouver Island check out Point-no-Point resort (http://www.pointnopointresort.com). It's just beyond Sooke and offers a variety of literally cliffside (sea cliffs) cedar cabins. You can view Washington State (US) mountains across the Juan de Fuca Strait, and get some excellent sunsets. There's also a really nice restaurant within walking distance of the cabins.
Have a blast!
