Pure speculation on my part, but I'll bet the Astra IS the new 9-2. I'll bet the whole Subaru thing is part smoke screen. Oh, we may get the Subaru version for awhile but I would not be surprised to see a switch to the Astra platform.
Why not? The new Astra has a turbo motor, adaptive suspension, real nice basic styling that would not need too many tweaks to get it looking like a Saab, and it would provide a nice political exit strategy when Fuji complaints reach a certain level. Ol' Maximum Bob Lutz could make product hay with that one, "I'm tired of the whining from Japan. To hell with 'em, I'll redo the 9-2 in two years and leave 'em suckin' their thumbs."
