Any crud or water in the underground storage tanks gets mixed up during product deliveries. If a station has filters (typically at the dispenser but sometimes at the tanks), they should filter out sediment. Some filters also prevent water from being passed on to customers by swelling shut in the presence of free water. However, these mitigation measures are all station-dependant. You have a much higher likelyhood of preventing problems at major branded stations (i.e. Chevron, Shell, Texaco, Exxon, Mobil, Amoco, BP, Conoco, Phillips, 76...) than at rot-gut brands (including Arco, Citco, Hess, Marathon, grocery stores, Costco,...). One indication is how clean the operator keeps his station, as that's proven to be a major indicator of operational integrity. Another is if the station sells a lot of gas (a good thing). Avoid ANY station which exhibits reduced pumping rates. That's the simplest way to see if their filters are clogging.
