Timing belts control the opening and closing of your valves. If they don't open and close at the right time, you destroy them. Cost me $2000 on my old Civic when the belt broke.
Saabs generally have timing chains, but the V6 (not V8) engine does not; it has a belt, made of rubber. I'd imagine if you look in your maintenance manual, it's suggested that you get it changed at some published interval (probably 60,000). If you had the dealer do the 60k service, they should have done it, but you can check with them. If the belt looks worn, you should replace it. If it looks worn and it's been less than 60k since it was replaced, there's something else wrong that's causing it to wear, and it would be nice to find the cause of that.
