At the extreme your system may have been compromised and now is be using as a conduit to send spam. However, I would say odds are against it as they would be unlikely to use your email address in most cases. Higher in likihood would be the possibily that you have a virus that is replicating itself by sending a copy to contacts in your email address book. However, in this case, I wouldn't expect a lot of returned email unless you have alot of defunct email addresses. The reason is that unless they are trying to exploit familarity I would expect them to spoof a source email address but exceptions are possible.

More likely someone is spoofing your email address to send spam or annoymous email from a computer other than yours. For instance, it could be a virus that has infected the computer of someone you exchange email and that is now spoofing your address.

There are are a number of other possiblities. For one thing are you sure you didn't send the email? A bad or defunct address in a distribution list your using perhaps? If you decide to open the the returned email (assuming it is a returned email) the message and the email headers (it's routing informaiton) might give you some idea what is up.
