"Titanium Nitride" is the coating that can be found on some high-end cutting tools (drills, end mills etc.). The most common color is gold. There is a related coating "titanium carbo-nitride" that's grey in color. Both of these coatings are extremely thin and are used to extend the life of the tool by providing a very hard, slippery surface for the base metal. I'm not sure which metals this finnish can be applied to aside from steel. The apearance isn't really shiny, more of a matte finnish.
For more information try google on "metal finish" and/or "Titanium Nitride".
I have no experience with chrome or nickle. Anyone..
