Say you were having a conversation with somebody, or doing something which required your attention. Now somebody just walks in, sits down next to you and starts talking to you insisting you listen and respond. You might feel inconvenienced by this and ask them to come back and talk when you're not busy. Of course, if they came running in and said your dad had just suffered a heart attack then you'd probably drop whatever you were doing! Why should it be any different with phones?
I personally don't see anything wrong with screening calls. I'm not sure why anyone with an answering service would drop everything and run to the phone- I guess its been programmed into us somewhere.
My life is not ruled by the phone, and unless they don't leave a message I'll call people back as soon as I have a chance to do so.
While were ranting though, I really find it annoying when I'm in a shop and the salesperson leaves me to wait while he fields a call from somebody who hasn't even decided if they'll shop there, or the competition yet.
Its also annoying if a cashier in a store speaks on the phone while they wordlessly serve you, barely acknowledging your presence. I'm sure they'd be the first to speak up if they were replaced by a machine.
My $0.014 USD.

PS- multiple phone calls/messages automatically go to the bottom of the call-back list, unless its the "heart attack" message.
